40 years of business (and life) lessons

40 Years PosterAs EBM celebrates its 40th anniversary, we’ve been looking at what makes our business great – and how we can make it even better.
From humble roots working in Perth, EBM has grown into Australia’s leading privately owned and operated insurance broker with more than 200 staff spread across nine offices in five states.
Needless to say, this success wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our clients – and we thank you for that – as well as our clear vision and a little luck.
We’ve also learnt some important lessons over four decades that hold true in our business, which you may
apply to your business, and even your personal life, too:
  1. Personal relationships are powerful: building and nurturing relationships is essential to any success.
  2. There is no such thing as overnight success: we’ve been patient and persistent in growing our business.
  3. You only succeed if your clients succeed: we always act in the best interests of our clients, leading to long-term relationships and referrals.
  4. Face-to-face is best: people appreciate personal attention.
  5. One size doesn’t fit all: people have different needs and we need to respond to those.
  6. Word of mouth is the strongest advertisement: many of EBM and RentCover’s clients are referred to us by our existing ones, which is a real marker of success.
  7. The devil is in the detail: always read the fine print. Policy wordings, in particular, require our careful and considered attention.
  8. You can’t provide good service if you haven’t got good people: we recruit and retain the industry’s best and brightest; and we nurture and reward our staff.
  9. Planning pays off: our position today, and our current leadership team, are both a result of careful succession planning some years ago.
  10. Don’t get comfortable with status quo: regulations change, new risks emerge and the marketplace evolves so we need to be looking forward, pre-empting opportunities and adapting our business in response.
